"Lazy Sunday"

The second Sunday during our stay at Benenden used to be called “lazy Sunday”. But even then “lazy Sunday” was anything but lazy. We arrive in the centre of Benenden village punctually at 10 am and attend mass. Not only are we welcome guests at the small church, but this time we have even been invited to help lead the mass.

The choir has rehearsed some songs and sings them during the service. After returning to Benenden School, we clean the rooms thoroughly and then go to lunch. Before the Benenden Olympics start, we take advantage of the perfect weather (it had rained earlier for 10 minutes) and line up for the class photos. Same as every year, the Benenden Olympics are opened by the royal family. “ I declare the olympic games open”, says Sylvia, impersonating Catherine (Kate), Duchess of Cambridge. After these words, the games begin and all the students participate and try in various disciplines to win victory for their TUs. There is a festive mood throughout the grounds. Everyone’s competitive spirit is awakened. Which will be the most skilled, the fastest and the cleverest TU? A special highlight of the day is always the volleyball tournament: TEACHERS vs. STUDENTS. The result is as devastating as in previous years (for the teachers). The boys and girls of the student team win a deserved victory. What else is there to do on a “lazy Sunday”? Perhaps a party? Sure!

The very first NEON party that has ever taken place at Benenden School or, I am sure, within 50 miles. A huge success! The best atmosphere, the best music and the best costumes all matched to the theme of “NEON”.
